Energy Saving Tips for Water and HeatingEconomical Use of Electricity and Resources Saves Money
Many people appreciate the need to conserve electricity especially when faced with huge bills. Putting into practice energy saving methods will soon become a way of life.
The effort to conserve electricity need not be so complicated—it basically involves a few simple changes that reduce electricity consumption. Being aware of excessive consumption, being alert to water heating wastage and getting the family involved can certainly see a dip in electricity spending, even thought there may be an initial outlay. Electric Water Heating TanksInstalling a geyser blanket or jacket can be an effective way of saving electricity. This form of insulation is not expensive (approximately $17) and easy to install. Hot water tank blankets can save a lot of money on electricity costs over the years. Tanks should be located as close as possible to points where hot water is being used. Insulating hot water pipes prevents heat loss. These pipe insulators are generally made of foam and the price varies depending on the thickness of the insulation. Be sure to switch off the circuit breaker to the hot water tank when on vacation or even when away on a weekend break. Installing a timer to switch off the geyser can save a huge amount on electricity. Establish when the family will be using the most hot water, after which set the timer to switch off and switch on again in time to heat up again. For example, if the timer is set to switch off at 09h00 and is set to come back on at 20h00, this would save 11 hours per day in heating expenses. Heating up the water during off peak hours will save even more. Do not set the water tank thermostat too high. A setting of 50-60º C (120ºF) is recommended. Water Heating Tips for Better ConservationBy taking a shower instead of filling up the bath tub water consumption is reduced and less hot water will be used. Even if taking a shower, do not shower longer than necessary as allowing hot water to pour down the drain is wasteful. Install solar heating panels and a solar water tank to maximize electricity savings. Expensive at first, it will save thousands over the years in energy costs and it is a form of heating that does not damage the environment. A DIY solar water heater is easy to build and it is possible to save up to 33% off electricity bills monthly while helping the environment at the same time. DIY solar water heaters usually come with step-by-step instructions and are affordable. It does not replace a home owner's existing hot water heater, it works by pre-heating the water entering the hot water system so that less natural gas or electrical energy is used for heating. Wash laundry in cold water unless absolutely necessary. Most of the energy used to wash clothes comes from heating water. Also, clothes last longer when cold washed. Source:
