Using air conditioning can cost up to 30 percent or more on electricity.
Air conditioning is certainly not a necessity; it is a luxury. Survive the heat and humidity of summer without air conditioning! Try these alternatives to air conditioning to save money and energy. Use Fans for Alternative Air ConditioningOne of the most obvious alternatives to air conditioning is fans. Fans will use up much less electricity than an air conditioner, and keep the air circulating. Shop for fans during the fall, or last few weeks of summer for the best deals. Stores need to rid them for fall items, so they will be marked down. Go for a medium sized fan for the downstairs area, and smaller fans for each bedroom. Turn on the bedroom fans when you retire for the evening. Create Your Own Paper FansMake paper fans! Kids will enjoy this activity. It’s fun and easy. Use sturdy paper, such as poster board or cardboard, but construction paper will do. They work great for cooling off, and it won't cost much. Wipe off The SweatSweating is probably the most irritating part of summer heat. Keep a clean rag close to wipe the sweat off, and run hot hands under the cold water every so often. Use an Ice Pack to Keep CoolIce packs work tremendously well, too. If you sit for most of the day, simply place an ice pack on the chair and let it rest on your lower back. Eat Cool Foods and Drink Cold DrinksSnacks and drinks for summertime heat: popsicles, ice cubes, and cold drinks will all help keep your body temperature down, and keep you hydrated. Get a Portable Swimming PoolPortable swimming pools seem to be popping up in stores in a wide variety of sizes, and they aren’t just for the kids anymore! If you can get one, go out and invest in a portable swimming pool. You and/or your kids can relax in some soothing, cool water. Create Less HeatCreate less heat in your home! Appliances such as dishwashers, ovens, televisions, and lamps create some heat. Reserve dishwasher use for nighttime. Avoid using the oven during the summertime. Clean or exercise in small increments to avoid heat stroke or dehydration. Get through the summer without expensive air conditioning. There are plenty of alternatives, and some of which you probably already have in your home! Use some if the ideas above, and add to the list with your own by leaving a comment below. Stay cool, hydrated, and save hard earned money!
